OUR BIG TRIP |
SPENCER SAMAROOBorn in 1972 I am the youngest of 3 children and the only boy. I have lived in London all my life, except for 4 years when I studied at the University of Liverpool for a BA degree in Sociology and then an MA degree in Welfare Organisation and Management. After graduating I spent over 7 years working in assorted marketing roles for a variety of businesses ranging from big blue chips to Internet start ups. As a big cricket enthusiast I have spent the last 16 summers purveying the art of seam bowling for South Harrow Cricket Club 1st XI. For 6 years I captained the team in the Middlesex Fullers Championship in which time we achieved promotion to the next division twice. During my life I have been fortunate enough to enjoy holidays in a number of countries including America, Barbados, India, Thailand, Canada, France, Portugal, Greece, Spain, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Denmark and Australia. My favourite travel destinations at present are Sydney, Washington DC and San Diego. The worst place I have visited is Calais; a grim desperate town whose only attraction is the fact that you can quickly stock up on cheap booze before catching the first ferry back to England, all within the space of about 3 hours! My favourite foods are Indian, Mexican and Chinese. I am particularly looking forward to tasting lots of new exotic dishes on my travels, especially in Asia. Generally an adventurous eater with a passion for meat based meals, I will no doubt succumb to the safety of the vegetarian option at various times during the journey when either the standard of hygiene is to say the least suspect or the meat option is still breathing! I enjoy playing and watching most sports and am a big West Brom fan, having supported them through thick and thin since around 1979, admittedly mainly thin. I will wear my West Brom shirt with pride whilst on my travels and no doubt continually be amused by the head scratching and blank faces of the locals in Shanghai, Spokane and Siena when they try and work out who the shirt represents! Music I am sure will have a big role to play on the trip particularly in whiling away the hours on uneventful coach or train journeys. As well as 60s, indie and dance music my portable library will definitely include my two all time favourites, LA Guns and Guns n Roses. Recently whenever I have found the time for a couple of moments of quiet contemplation I find myself wondering what effect the crunching guitar riffs of songs like Locomotive will have on fellow passengers on the Oslo to Bergen railway, as they seep through my headphones late into the night.
