OUR BIG TRIP |
WHY ARE WE TRAVELLING?THE WORLD. Over 6.35 billion people, 200 countries and 85 million square miles of land mass. The world is a big place; but only if you chose to keep it that way.
There is so much to explore and so many ways to do it. Whether it be air, sea, road or foot, it has never been easier to travel. Oceans can be crossed and continents covered in a matter of hours and barring an over possessive propensity for luxury, at relatively cheap cost.
Sure I have done the 18-30s thing in Majorca, Citybreaks in Europe and visiting relatives in America, India, Australia and Guyana, but I have never really travelled. At 31 I have seen some of the world, but nowhere near enough.
I am not sure exactly when I started feeling this way. To be truthful I think I always have. Perhaps its in my genes as my parents have travelled a lot and my sisters and are retired backpackers. However the realisation dawned on me in May 2003 when office politics disillusioned my motivation to continue the 9 to 5 doctrine. There had to be more to life than spending 5 days at work holding out for a weekend that you could never really enjoy, because of work the following Monday.
I needed a break. I wanted to travel to see the world. To start a new life in Brisbane with my fiance Cath (Well at least to live in Brisbane for a few years until we decide where our future lies!)
Part of the blame for this realisation must be attached to the excellent travel show GlobeTrekker. I am not sure if it was Ian Wright or Megan McCormack or both who struck a cord with me, but seeing them experience so many wonderful cultures, climates, sights, sounds and smells convinced me that I should travel whilst the opportunity presented itself. If I dont do it now, perhaps I never will.
Call it a mid life crisis or perhaps a restless spirit. But its something I want to do. Its something I have to do. Some people may be happy wrapped in a comfort blanket of work security and weekend hedonism, but I am not. At least not at the moment.
So roll on July 11th 2004 when its bye bye blighty, adios, au revoir.
Some day I know I will be back. But for the next year at least I will be a free spirit, roaming through Europe, Asia and North America, expanding my horizons on a journey of discovery, wherever it may lead.
I hope you stay with us through our journey, as I am sure that we will have some tales to tell. This trip is significant for me, although I do not know why. I guess I am searching for something, but I do not know what. If I find it I will be sure to let you know.
I wonder if Megan and Ian know what they have started....
